The rise of Middle East peace diplomacy - an overview

Early in Camp David; US, the tripartite summit diplomacy laid foundations for alternative scenarios of peace in the Middle East. Mediated by US President J. Carter, only the Egyptian scenario was implemented by President Sadat of Egypt, and Prime Minister M. Pegen of Israel. Other scenarios came later in Oslo, Madrid, Sharm El Sheikh as bipartite Israeli-Palestinian agreements, or unilateral proposals from the US, EC, Saudia Arabia, and Egypt.

Were peace processes getting better?

Not at all.

Middle East conflicts went to extremes

On all fronts instead, particularly after the 9/11 terrorrist attacks against the US, events went to extremes: assassination of palestinian activists, humiliation, and land re-occupation on the Israeli side, The Intifada (uprising), and suicidal bombing against the Israeli on the Palestinian side, and the anti-terrorism war against suspects in Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Libya, and above all today, against Iraq by the US and its allies.

Four obstacles facing four unanswered questions

A-Jerusalem question - to whom it would belong ?
B-The refugees question..how the UN resolutions be enacted ?
C-The secure borders - where and how ?
D-Israeli settlements - how be dismantled ?
