Reports from the Nodes


Beijing Node

Under the support of AC/UNU, Beijing Millennium Project Node has achieved the original goals of its work plan in 1998. The
main works are as follows:

    1.The panel of Beijing Node enlarged its members. The new members are CUI Shuhong from National Environmental
     Protection Administration, LIU Xiwen from Document and Information Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, LU
     Yonglong from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, HU Zhenqi from Chinese Mining University, and
     MIAO Zewei from Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences.

   2.On July 10, a mid-year working meeting of Beijing Node was held in Beijing. The contents of the meeting covers the
     introduction of research results of last year and main contents of the book "1998 State of the Future", main works of the
     first part of this year and interviewing results, and the working plan of Beijing Node in the next six months.

   3.On December 17, 1988, the yearly working meeting of Beijing Node was held in Beijing. The contents of the meeting
     covers the introduction of research results of Millennium Project, main works of the Beijing Node and interviewing
     results, the working plan of Beijing Node next year, main urgent issues faced in China and the possibility of holding a
     ceremony for new millennium. The participants discussed the identified issues in China and the measurements and the
     outlines of the two books: "Great Trends of China" and "Ecological Security" which will be published next year.

   4.Distributed "1998 State of the Future", collected responses from readers, and contacted publishers to search the
     possibility to publish some results of the future study report. Translated the main theme of the Report into Chinese and
     published a special issue in the "Newsletter for Promoting Sustainable Development and Interdisciplinary Studies on
     Economy, Ecology and Ecopolis", introducing the millennium project to the publics.

   5.According to the activities of Millenium Project Headquarter, carried out three rounds of Global Lookout study and two
     rounds of Environmental Security Questionnaire investigations.

   6.Translated Global Lookout interview questionnaires into Chinese; identified and interviewed ten politicians, two
     entrepreneurs, two NGO representatives, and two officers from local office of international agencies during round 2 of
     the Global Look-Out Studies (see Appendix 1); distributed the translated Chinese versions to the regional Lookout
     Panel; collected responses, translated into English, and sent to the coordinating office at AC/UNU.

   7.Held four workshops for China’s future together with other NGOs, the topics of which include the population quality,
     urbanization, ecological deterioration and westernizing in life style, assessment of regional sustainable development,
     prediction of sustainability in future in county scale, participated by researchers, graduate students, citizens and a few
     policy makers.

   8.Chair of the Node, Prof. Wang Rusong and member of the Node, Prof. Jin zhouying joined World Bank and State of the
     World Forum Expert Consultation on world water and environmental issues, which encouraged and promoted future’s
     research in China.

   9.Participated Millennium Project’s mid-year and annual meetings of the Planning Committee.



                         Work Plan of Millennium Project - Beijing Node
 
 
  1. Fulfilling the tasks asked by AC/UNU according to the 1999 contract;
  2. Holding four workshops in Beijing, collecting the responses of the Research Report, exchanging the views and
  3.      information about the future studies, sustainable development and other subjects;
  4. Looking for additional financial sources from government agencies, enterprises and international organizations to support
  5.      initiating millennium researches in China to identify priority issues and strategies in China, Publishing one to two research
  6.      reports: "Great Trends of China" and "Ecological Security";
  7. Editing and Publishing Newsletters, introducing the up-date progress of the millennium project in 1999 to the publics;
  8. Searching for the possibility to publish Millennium Project Report in Chinese;
  9. Organizing three to four planning committee meetings, arranging the activities of the Node, making up and/or modifying
  10.      the work plan of thew Node;
  11. Holding a New Millennium Ceremony in China together with other organizations; and
  12. Propagandizing the activities and research results by newspaper, internet and other mediums.
