Para
despertar una conciencia propositiva entre los niños, imaginar nuevas
alternativas de solución a diversos problemas y abatir quince retos
de la humanidad, se creó el Premio del Milenio, Los Retos del Futuro.
En representación del Presidente Vicente Fox Quesada, el Secretario
de Educación Pública, Reyes Tamez Guerra, entregará
el próximo 15 de marzo a las 10 horas, los premios a los ganadores
de este certamen en el país, en sus quince categorías, en
una ceremonia que se realizará en el Alcázar del Castillo
de Chapultepec.
En el evento también se lanzará a nivel mundial este premio
del Consejo Americano para la Universidad de las Naciones Unidas que cuenta
con 27 nodos en todo el mundo, incluido México, y en los que participan
dos mil expertos en estudios del futuro.
Las categorías o retos en los que serán premiados los trabajos
presentados por los menores, son: Desarrollo Permanente; Agua Limpia para
Todos; Población y Recursos; Democracia; Políticas a Largo
Plazo; Sociedad de la Información y Medios de Comunicación;
Brecha entre la Pobreza y la Riqueza; Salud; Capacidad para Decidir; Paz
y Conflicto; Situación de la Mujer; Crimen Transnacional Organizado;
Energía; Ciencia y Tecnología, y Etica.
El titular de la SEP entregará reconocimientos a los tres primeros
lugares de cada reto, entre los que se encuentran estudiantes de todo el
país, principalmente de Baja California, Distrito Federal, Hidalgo,
Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sinaloa y Tabasco.
Los estudiantes ganadores provienen en un 75 por ciento de escuelas públicas
y el restante 25 de planteles privados. Participaron en el proceso de selección
888 alumnos de quinto y sexto grados de primaria que concursaron en la Olimpiada
del Conocimiento Infantil, del Parlamento y de la Narrativa sobre Cuentos
Indígenas.
El certamen que tiene también como misión la formación
de líderes nacionales, agentes del cambio, para mejorar la calidad
de vida actual y futura, contó con jurados expertos en cada materia
de los sectores público y privado, así como del académico.

Project
It is increasingly clear that the world has the resources to address the
15 Global Challenges facing humanity today, but it is not increasingly clear
how much wisdom, goodwill, and intelligence will be focused on these challenges.
Mexico's initiative lead by Concepción Olavarrieta and the Minister
of Education to bring these challenges to the youth of Mexico will help
insure that the next generation of Mexicans will be more likely to grow
up with that wisdom, goodwill, and intelligence.
On behalf of the Millennium Project, I have the honor to invite the futurists
of the world to initiate similar youth awards in their countries and I hope
the Minister of Education will also invite the other Ministers of Education
around the world to initiate the Millennium Awards in their country.
We have received expressions of interest from other Chairs of Millennium

For example in Italy the Millennium Project's Node is chaired by Professor
Eleonora Masini, at the Pontification University at the Holy See. She is
also the Chair of "Macroproblems Group A. Peccei" founded by Aurelio
Peccei (the founder of the Club of Rome) and write that she may add the
15 Global Challenges to their annual competition for elementary and secondary
school children prizes that are given at the National Library in Rome. In
addition to Italian entries, submissions also come from Australia, Finland,
Ireland, Germany and France.
Maybe one day there will be a world Millennium Prize. All children of the
world could have the opportunity to contribute their ideas to address the
15 Global Challenges - and this could help the world think together about
our common future. And maybe this world event could be hosted each year
here Mexico - the creator of the Millennium Prize.
